A Pretty. Fun. Picnic. In a Box.

Eco-friendly picnic boxes for urbanites with a hankering for a picnic. Fully compostable utensils, plates, cups and napkins.

“Sorry, wicker, it was fun while it lasted, but the new picnic belongs to post-consumer pulp. So pack up and park on. It’s time to escape the office for an afternoon, schedule that over-due date or just go have some fun.” – Boxal

Fabric and vinyl art at HOME! Download inkbloom’s designs, recolour them or coordinate with your project, add text to personalize and print on your inkjet. Cotton fabrics and vinyl are also available from them online. I’m thinking product tags, business cards, personalized pillows…

eye candy: method

April 29, 2010

From www.methodhome.com

Method home care and personal care products are certainly nothing new, but I continually find myself staring at the Method section up at Shoppers Drug Mart. It’s no secret that they are leading in design and witty copy. I tend to be more of a vinegar-and-elbow-grease-girl but have purchased a few of their products, from hand soap to toilet bowl cleaner.

I haven’t been able to justify the cost of the new laundry detergent – until now! Go online to print your $2 off coupon. No zip code? – c’mon use 90210. I always go for a detergent that looks “green” but it can be frustrating navigating the cryptic labels. Good news! Method has been pronounced green as green can be in a review by Inhabitat – Design Will Save the World.

Fresh Silk Pillowslip by Tanja De La Hoz

Last night I slept for the first time on one of Tanja De La Hoz’s Fresh Silk Pillowslips. I’ve been missing out. I worked with Tanja to create a logo and packaging for her line of silk pillowslips. I love that they are made in Canada, are hypo-allergenic and as stated on the package “…silk will not absorb lotions or steal moisture from your face while you sleep.” From fresher skin to less touseled hair, these are the perfect gift: me-to-me, hostess, mother’s day, shower….

Contact Tanja by email at tatanjadl@hotmail.com.

it’s graphic: Wall Decals from Hommu

January 7, 2010

Wall decals have been around for a quite a few years. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they are popular in kids rooms and are a convenient way to spruce up a rental. I’ve seen a lot of not-so-great ones out there, but Hommu changes all that. Their packaging is what caught my eye, and after further inspection, I think they’re on to something.

artsy: gift bow from magazine

December 22, 2009

Last minute wrapping emergency? Got a few old magazines hanging around? Turn a magazine page into a bow! I love that you can choose a less traditional colour palette and turn an old idea into a new one.

magazine gift bow instructions

magazine gift bow instructions

Cut a magazine page lengthwise into 9 strips, 3/4″ wide.
Leave 3 of the strips full length.
Cut 1″ off 3 of the strips.
Cut 2″ inches off 2 of the strips.
Cut the last strip down to 3 1/2″.

Twist each strip to form a double loop and adhere it in the center. Shape the last, little short strip into a circle and secure it.

Place the 3 longest pieces on top of each other, spacing them evenly as you layer and securing as you go. I used a dab of glue stick and it worked like a charm. Add the next two groups of pieces in the same fashion. Final step, stick the loop into the center.

Use old maps, charts, paper bags… and get that wrapping finished! At least if the present’s not so hot, you can at least brag about making the bow.

happy hour: DRY Soda (part deux)

October 6, 2009

www.drysoda.com

Had a closer look at DRY’s website. Not only is the design on the ball (they’ve received their fair share of design awards), but they’re up to some pretty neat things. Turns out I wasn’t far off base on my instinct to create a cocktail – check out the recipe page!

Counterbalance
Created by Jared Scarr & Andrew Lanier | Crush Restaurant – Seattle, WA
2 oz. Hendrick’s Gin
1/2 oz. fresh squeezed lemon juice
1/2 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz. fresh cucumber juice
3/4 oz. agave nectar
4 mint leaves
1 oz. Cucumber DRY Soda
Serve: Tall Rocks Glass
Garnish: Cucumber slices and mint leaves

Pairing recipes here. A fun idea for a non-alchoholic event.

Spotted at Bungalow in Estevan Village and Paboom on Fort Street. Fred’s has fresh, slightly retro vector graphics, great fonts and hilarious product names. “GIN & TITONIC™, sink one in your drink “. “AIRFORK ONE™, for perfect in-flight meals.” I totally need one of these.

Again, can’t find websites for either Bungalow (2525A Estevan Avenue) or Papoom (641 Fort Street)!

Green Toy tea set

Cool packaging, cooler toys. Made from plastic milk jugs in California, all Green Toys products are packaged in slick recycled corrugated boxes with no plastics, cellophane or twist-ties, and are 100% recyclable. Check out the recycling truck! Available from one of my favorite local toy stores, Buddies Toys, in Estevan Village or Beacon Avenue in Sidney. Can’t find a website for Buddies! Let me know if you know of one. They can be reached at (250) 595-6501‎.

happy hour: Gentleman Jim’s Real Ginger Ale

Gentleman Jim's Real Ginger Ale

Gentleman Jim's Real Ginger Ale

TGIF. It seems as though the summer heat has re-joined us and I have the perfect thing for a Friday afternoon. If you live on Vancouver Island and you haven’t heard of Phillips Brewery, you probably don’t get out much. Their label design never disappoints, their website is unique and fun and they are always coming out with new products and packaging. You’ll see them at your favorite restaurants and events – it’s Beer Fest this weekend! But lets talk about this brew. I heard about it through a Phillips tweet, and knew I had to try some. I am certainly not qualified to offer a review of Gentleman Jim’s Real Ginger Ale, all I can say is great colour, real ginger flavor and GET SOME!
