Boulevard Magazine – 3 issues!

January 31, 2012

Why not wait until THREE issues are ready to post them?

Read Boulevard February

Read February
February’s cover was the most fun to shoot – not only is it a dog, but one of my favorite dogs, Munro! He stayed in position for a good two hours, definitely earning the Woofles treats. As he posed with his bow tie (inside story), I said it looked like he was about to have a scotch. So photographer Gary McKinstry made it happen! Out came the scotch, glass and ice. Very debonaire.
Although Esi Edugyan has had plenty of local coverage lately, Azim captured her in a light that presents her in a new way. Thanks to The Superior for opening up especially for us.
I’m very excited about Sarah MacNeill’s involvement with the magazine as the writer for Design Matters. Check out the liberty print boots and birdcage umbrellas on page 54.
Everybody has time to make popcorn, right? Love the vintage/rustic feel of Justin Eckersall’s shot of our recipes.

Read Boulevard January

Read January
On the cover is the home of architect Terence Williams, a modern yet subtle retreat in Cadboro Bay, shot by Vince Klassen.
“Football” and “Victoria” aren’t generally spoken in the same sentence, but the story on Terrel and Marcus Davis, Victoria’s best in the football scene, is opened by a dramatic family portrait by Vancouver based photographer Justin Eckersall. Also in this issue by Eckersall is a shot of the new Chevy Volt in front of Dockside Green. He managed to capture the vehicle in motion while fending off commissionaires.
Emily Sawyer Smith, a “real” cowichan knitter is captured by Dean Azim in a beautifully melancholic tone.

Read Boulevard December

Read December
You’ve heard of “Christmas in July”, in this case it was “Christmas in August”. It was one of the hottest days of the summer up at Bear Mountain for the Hot Properties shoot for this issue. The team at Home Style Solutions exploded on the scene with all the trimmings for a small space Christmas. Also in this issue, Dean Azim presented me with so many outstanding images from the Stone Soup Inn, that I was unable to choose – so I didn’t! Nigel Brown, new to Boulevard, was my go-to person for shots to accompany the Travel Near Pacific Marine Circle Route story.

in the house: Marie Claire Maison

December 8, 2010

via www.marieclairemaison.com

Reinvented and renovated, this church was transformed into cozy, chic and serene abode by architect Perry Harrison-Hyde. Who knows what stories this church has to tell, but it was given a second chance with the marriage of contemporary architecture and history. Love that painting and check out the window screen separating kitchen from dining.

eye candy: Yacht Design by Claesson Koivisto Rune

July 6, 2010

Today the sun is out and we’re going to *gasp* push past 20 degrees today. I’d like to be on the water on my way to a secluded destination. Have a peek at this 100′ yacht which had an interior overhaul by renowned architects Claesson Koivisto Rune from Stockholm as featured in the July/August edition of Azure magazine. Sleek, minimal and a little retro with walnut and white.

eye candy: June issue Food & Wine

June 7, 2010

from www.foodandwine.com (L) / from www.trinaturk.com (R)

On the plane back from Alabama, I had a thorough look at Food & Wine’s June issue. I was so impressed that I promptly dropped off my subscription request at the Denver airport. Here’s a roundup of a few highlights:

Chinese Coleslaw
Pretzel Crusted Crab Cakes
Ginger Marinated Bulgogi Style Chicken – Tried this last night, recommended.
Thai Turkey Burger
Fat Tray from Alessi
Dry Fly Distilling, a craft distillery in Spokane, Washington.
Trina Turk cocktail napkins
Bodum picnic charcoal grill
www.33beers.com Beer Journal
V Lounge, Waikiki – pastry chef from Nobu has opened his own pizza joint.
The Ranch House, Honolulu – local favorites
Table One Halekulani, Waikiki – personally designed menus by Chef Garg
La Cantine Merci, Paris – fashion, a used-book cafĂ©, a haberdashery and a flower shop with a communal table.

I know it’s Food and WINE and there were some good recommendations in this issue. I didn’t have much luck finding them at the BC Liquor Store. Supposedly we should be on the lookout for 2009 South African Chenin Blancs or Sauvignon Blancs.

in the house: Lonny online magazine

November 10, 2009

CondĂ© Naste recently announced that Gourmet magazine, which been inspiring us in the kitchen with it’s gorgeous delivery of photography, written word and recipes since 1941, will cease publication with the November issue. Three other magazines are also taking the fall – parenting magazine Cookie and the wedding publications Elegant Bride and Modern Bride. My passion for print design coupled with my hereditary addiction to magazines of all kinds has taken a serious hit. What does this transition to online publications mean for the future of magazines, books and the art of reading?

Domino, House & Garden, and Blueprint have also fallen by the wayside this year. I’m reluctant to join the bandwagon, but if change must come, then at least I can spend some more time on my computer mouse-clicking my way through recently launched Lonny, an online magazine founded by Domino alumni Michelle Adams and photographer Patrick Cline. Be patient, it takes a few clicks to get to the good stuff, but there are pages and pages of home decorating inspiration here. Thanks to LB for the hot tip.
