Logos are like ladies. They can nurture a new idea, demand recognition, kill the competition and get the job done – all at the same time. When it comes to graphic design, many businesses live with a poorly designed logo, business card or website because “it’s good enough for now”. Since when is “good enough” part of your mission statement? No more excuses for bad design.
If you had one message to send to the world what would it be, how would it look and how would you say it?
I like these logos for the purpose of illustrating how a concept can be visually interpreted:
Lori from Simple Essence Life Design came to me with an existing business card design and was looking for a slight re-work. I liked the image and thought that the sentiment could be even stronger paired down.
Simple Essence Life Design offers an opportunity for those who are “wanting to increase your joy factor in life, wanting to learn how to deal with your kids differently, looking for help finding your true passion in life, or just feel like your life could really use a boost up to the next level”, an opportunity to take confident strides in the right direction. Stay tuned for news on her website.
A new logo has been launched for Sarah at Boble Designs! Her jewelry designs are phenomenal, a little bit delicate, a little bit bold and just plain stunning. Every woman needs a piece from her collection of necklaces, bracelets and earrings. She has a classic style with a contemporary edge and uses both gold and silver, pearls and precious and semi-precious stones (in the most gorgeous palette by the way). Hold your breath for product shots and the release of her new website! In the meantime, contact Sarah at Boble Designs by phone: 250.881.3830. Commissions available.
As Sarah says, “Love what you wear, wear what you love”.
This new business is ready to take on your worst nightmares – focusing on Business and Personal Organizational Services. Everything from getting your finances in order, maximizing opportunities, reducing expenses, property management and travel arrangements.
The logo reflects the concept of bringing chaos to order, with the wild movement of the green stripes and the exuberance of the figure in it’s centre. I’d be pulling off a pose like this if someone organized my finances, maximized my opportunities and reduced my expenses. For contact info, check out the fun new mini business card below. Website coming soon.
Last night I slept for the first time on one of Tanja De La Hoz’s Fresh Silk Pillowslips. I’ve been missing out. I worked with Tanja to create a logo and packaging for her line of silk pillowslips. I love that they are made in Canada, are hypo-allergenic and as stated on the package “…silk will not absorb lotions or steal moisture from your face while you sleep.” From fresher skin to less touseled hair, these are the perfect gift: me-to-me, hostess, mother’s day, shower….
Last night’s Oscar-Winning Animated Short Film, Logorama, proves just how permeating modern advertising is. The 16-minute film was comprised solely of well known logos and characters from over 2,500 large corporations.
Nicolas Schmerkin, the film’s producer, says “The brain can register 14 logos in less than one second. Making the logos characters with sets and props is about what we’re living. I’m not talking about what the logos represent. They’re used for what they are.” It took longer than Avatar to produce.
I was a terrible movie watcher this year, seeing only 2 out of all the nominees. Both were documentaries that I watched in flight. The Cove, won for documentary feature and follows an impressive team of activists, filmmakers and freedivers (a woman from Vancouver) as they embark on a covert mission to penetrate a remote and hidden cove in Taiji, Japan, shining a light on a dark and deadly secret. Utilizing state-of-the-art techniques, including hidden microphones and cameras in fake rocks, the team uncovers how this small seaside village serves as a horrifying microcosm of massive ecological crimes happening worldwide.
Everyone should see Food Inc. It’s a reality check and a reminder to re-connect with where your food is coming from, how it is processed and how to support a positive food economy. It’s worth watching just to hear what farmer Joel Salatin has to say. He’ll make you want to ditch your skinny jeans for a pair of overalls and get your hands on a family of pigs and chickens.
Last month saw the launch of a logo and web page for Vasati Homes in Vancouver BC. Offering custom residential design and construction, the stylized home in the logo design uses greens to reflect the meaning of “vasati”: an integral architectural concept based on the natural laws of spacial energy used to bring the living space in resonance with nature and its inhabitants.
Vasati Homes requested a one page web site to provide easy access to an image gallery and contact info. Have a look through their gorgeous work at www.vasatihomes.com.
The flame is currently making it’s way through downtown Vancouver. Terry Fox’s dad and Walter Gretzky are among the torch bearers this morning, and the opening ceremonies are tonight at 6pm at BC Place. Pre-shows start around 4pm.
Below are the logos from the Vancouver games, upcoming London games and the bid logos for 2016. I don’t want to be critical here, but the London logo really had me scratching my head. The hard-edged geometric shapes, the colours…then it occurred to me – the 80’s trend!
It is the time of year when the “best of 2009 ____ ” lists appear everywhere. Today I’ve been checking out what REBRAND and Brand New have to say about the best and worst brands of 2009. The below were standouts for me, both for their messaging and for their dramatic transformation. It’s amazing what a little good design can do.

Kudos to Meredith for catering entirely to women without looking… pink.
I recently completed this logo for Royal Jubilee Denture Clinic, a new state of the art denture clinic that just opened its doors in Oak Bay. After meeting with the lovely Brandi and Ian, I learned that they were looking for something to reflect their modern, progressive and service-orientated approach. They came up with the tagline “The Perfect Fit”, which heavily influenced my design. Although working from scratch can often turn out fabulous results, it can be helpful if I’m given something to go on like a few buzz words or a specific colour. They wanted to make use of their office’s colour palette and I was provided with paint swatches to make sure I was on the right track. Given this information, and the fact that this couple loves the outdoors, this is what I came up with:
