From www.methodhome.com
Method home care and personal care products are certainly nothing new, but I continually find myself staring at the Method section up at Shoppers Drug Mart. It’s no secret that they are leading in design and witty copy. I tend to be more of a vinegar-and-elbow-grease-girl but have purchased a few of their products, from hand soap to toilet bowl cleaner.
I haven’t been able to justify the cost of the new laundry detergent – until now! Go online to print your $2 off coupon. No zip code? – c’mon use 90210. I always go for a detergent that looks “green” but it can be frustrating navigating the cryptic labels. Good news! Method has been pronounced green as green can be in a review by Inhabitat – Design Will Save the World.

“….what is good taste and is it a quality worth noting in a person?… Taste is different than trend. Trend is current and fun. But taste shows you know what things mean, where they come from, why they exist, and what they represent. Very few young people have great taste – it takes too much wisdom. I once heard that wisdom doesn’t come with age, it comes with experience”.
- Cobi Ladner (previous editor of H&H magazine in a tribute to Nancy Jane Hastings, freelance contributor), 2002
I’m planning to take my rental walls from off-white to white this weekend. It was more difficult that I thought to find a white that wasn’t pink, blue or yellow. I think the fear with white paint is that it will create a cold, sterile effect which is why the dingy yellow-ish white usually prevails. White reflects colours from the contents of the room, and plays with light, creating a variety of coloured shadows as the natural light changes. By and large, of the real white-whites I’ve seen a lot of “cloud white”, “simply white” and “decorators white”, all from Benjamin Moore.
The winner so far is “simply white”, although I’m tempted by the name “cotton balls”. There is a phrase from a children’s book (which one?) that appeals to me for a room’s mood, “quieter than a cotton ball”. Full report to follow.

Did somebody say paint by numbers? Spiny sea creatures? Bright tropical prints? Out of my price range, but a little admiration never hurt.
Spiny Lobster Rug – cute for a kid’s room no? / You Are Here Rug – careful, I might be tempted to colour in the blank spots / Batur Rug, Balinese Flowers – I see white walls and blue ocean. Available in a really cool 2.5′ x 9′ for $288 at Anthropologie.

This 900sqft 1930′s house was deemed a teardown, but the new owners decided to work with what they had instead of starting over. Inspired by the possibilities.

A couple of weeks ago I was basking in the sunshine on the lawn at Shangri La in Honolulu, home of Doris Duke. Built in 1937, Shangri La houses an impressive collection of Islamic art and is considered one of Hawaii’s most architecturally significant homes. Shangri La is open to the public for tours a few days a week, you need to schedule at least a week in advance. You can view the rooms (including some that are not part of the tour) and view the art collection on the website. Tours are reserved through the Honolulu Academy of Arts, worth a visit in its own right.
Unfortunately photography is not permitted inside, but I did take some photos of the grounds. It’s centered around an interior courtyard and is packed with artistic influences from around the world. Tile, wood, plaster, chenille drapery and a massive window that drops down into the floor. I think it’s safe to say that Doris Duke was eccentric, and ahead of her time. Duke was the only child of tobacco and electric energy tycoon James Buchanan Duke. Her father died in 1925 when Doris was twelve, leaving approximately half of his estate to The Duke Endowment with the remainder, estimated at $100 million, going to Doris. She married (for the first time) in 1935 and embarked on a year long honeymoon which ended in Hawaii. A 2 week stay turned into 3 months, they acquired property and built Shangri La from the ground up. Worth a visit, kudos to our guide, a wealth of information.

I was very excited to wake up to a message from Gloria at Hommu in Barcelona. The feedback from this post about their wall decals was overwhelmingly positive. Thanks for your news Gloria!
Hi, everybody!
First of all, thank you very much for your interest in Hommu.
We are very happy to know about people so far from Europe!
Unfortunately, we are not physically at Canadian stores yet. But you can buy our products online with total security!
Due to an increasing demand on our products from people living in america, we decided to negociate better conditions with UPS.
As a result, from now on, delivery to any american country has decreased considerably, which means that if you live in any of those countries, you can still buy Hommu online at www.hommu.com, but spending less money!
We suggest you that also could share costs with a friend who could be interested in a Hommu vinyl too… Is an idea!
However, we will work hard for being at Canadian stores in the future!
Kind regards from Barcelona!
Gloria

Yesterday in Victoria was amazingly warm and sunny for this time of year. Got me inspired to spruce up my small space dining area with fresh infusions of spring.

“Signs of life are good design elements”, says Daryll Carter in his book The New Traditional. It can be a challenge in our high-tech society to find a human trace. I think it’s always important to bring any design idea back to the basics, put pencil to paper, use your senses and work with what inspires you.
Carter also makes a statement that rang true with me regarding client relationships. “I always know when my clients and I have reached the defining moment in our relationship. As in any relationship, you have to feel out your partner…. What a relief it is when everyone finally gets comfortable. Nothing is more liberating than truthful, fluid dialogue. The first time a client says ‘I hate it’, I know there is trust. Nothing is more counterproductive than gratuitous deference.”
I think the fireplace treatment above (scanned from “The New Traditional”) is a concept worthy of a new home or a clever way to cover up an unsightly existing fireplace. I’d like a firewood nook to go with it, please.

I had lots of great feedback about the Hommu wall decals last week in this post. If a trip to Spain isn’t in the plan, then you can check out these options closer to home. Word on the street is that the brokerage fees are double the cost of the product if you order from some of the American companies. Splash Wall Art offers a flat rate of $10 within Canada. Surface Collective is based in Vancouver! They also ship via Canada Post. Home Depot carries some wall decals… patience is required for viewing their website so have a look next time you’re in and let me know.

Wall decals have been around for a quite a few years. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they are popular in kids rooms and are a convenient way to spruce up a rental. I’ve seen a lot of not-so-great ones out there, but Hommu changes all that. Their packaging is what caught my eye, and after further inspection, I think they’re on to something.

Hommu is located in Spain. Not so convenient for BCC: blog locals. Stay tuned for some Canadian options.

Baby to Toddler high chair
CleverTomato started following me today on Twitter so I went to check them out. Modern kids furniture, helleluja! From the site, “We specialize in modern furniture products for babies, kids, teens and a few great things for Mom + Dad. These inventive products provide stylish work, sleep and play spaces that will inspire you as well as your kids.” From what I gather, they are based in the New York area, and don’t currently offer shipping to Canada. Unfortunately, such is often the case with many great finds I come across.
The high chair in the image above is on sale for $99. Check out this changer, the surfboard growth chart and this sweet toy box.
Baby bedding can be overwhelming to say the least. There is a fine line between fun and funny looking. Love this organic Fish and Pebbles bedding.

Let’s not get too excited with decorations or Christmas music just yet, but I’m thinking about what will greet my friends and family on my front door this year.

November 10, 2009
Condé Naste recently announced that Gourmet magazine, which been inspiring us in the kitchen with it’s gorgeous delivery of photography, written word and recipes since 1941, will cease publication with the November issue. Three other magazines are also taking the fall – parenting magazine Cookie and the wedding publications Elegant Bride and Modern Bride. My passion for print design coupled with my hereditary addiction to magazines of all kinds has taken a serious hit. What does this transition to online publications mean for the future of magazines, books and the art of reading?
Domino, House & Garden, and Blueprint have also fallen by the wayside this year. I’m reluctant to join the bandwagon, but if change must come, then at least I can spend some more time on my computer mouse-clicking my way through recently launched Lonny, an online magazine founded by Domino alumni Michelle Adams and photographer Patrick Cline. Be patient, it takes a few clicks to get to the good stuff, but there are pages and pages of home decorating inspiration here. Thanks to LB for the hot tip.

Images via Fred's
Spotted at Bungalow in Estevan Village and Paboom on Fort Street.
Fred’s has fresh, slightly retro vector graphics, great fonts and hilarious product names. “GIN & TITONIC™, sink one in your drink “. “AIRFORK ONE™, for perfect in-flight meals.” I totally need one of
these.
Again, can’t find websites for either Bungalow (2525A Estevan Avenue) or Papoom (641 Fort Street)!
