locals only: Share Organics

November 18, 2010

I am relieved that I don’t want to purchase today’s Groupon. It’s a great deal – $11 for a Customizable Classic Calendar from Staples Canada (up to $22.99 Value) – but I’ve got that realm covered. I’ll be offering 2011 calendars on my online store soon! Stay tuned for a sneak peak and more info.

My first Groupon purchase was a “Singles Box” from Share Organics. A selection of fresh fruits and vegetables including root vegetables, greens and salad stuff all sourced close to home arrived on my doorstep this week. I beefed up my order with some organic milk, a baguette from Wild Fire Bakery and some raw milk parmesan.

contents of my Share Organics box

Although I enjoy sourcing my own food, I have always wanted to try one of these programs. It’s convenient and a thrill to have hand-picked organic groceries delivered right to your door. The contents of your box are emailed 5 days before delivery and you can customize the contents or add fresh local dairy, meat, baked goods, prepared meals…. the list goes on. What I was particularly excited about was the hope that the box would contain ingredients I don’t normally buy. The “what are those things?” in my box were Jerusalem Artichokes (sunchokes). Find out what I did with them later this week! The contents arrive in a plastic tote with a cold pack. You set your tote out on your next delivery day and voila – it’s filled back up again. Receive a delivery once a week or once in a blue moon.

bits & bytes: Groupon

November 17, 2010

Who doesn’t know what Groupon is?

Deal lovers beware. Groupon negotiates massive discounts on goods, services and cultural events all over North America. They offer deals to subscribers via email but I prefer their iPhone app where you can check in periodically to view deals by city. The deals are activated when a certain number of people agree to buy so subscribers get a great deal and the business gets a boost. You don’t have to sign up for email alerts – you can just check the site from time to time.

It’s exciting enough that Victoria has been recently added to their lineup but I envision using this while on the road. You know you’re in trouble when you’re considering going to Long Island for 50% a hot stone massage and facial. Also keep your eye on Vancouver and other Canadian cities for web deals.

So far I have made 2 purchases – $15 for $30 delivery basket of organics from Share Organics and $15 for $30 worth of food and drinks at Canoe. Has anybody been to Posh restaurant on Fort Street in the Mosaic buidling? Today’s deal is $12 for $25 worth of Sukiyaki and Asian fare.

Check it out here.

Find out this week on the blog how my first Groupon experience went….

eye candy: method

April 29, 2010

From www.methodhome.com

Method home care and personal care products are certainly nothing new, but I continually find myself staring at the Method section up at Shoppers Drug Mart. It’s no secret that they are leading in design and witty copy. I tend to be more of a vinegar-and-elbow-grease-girl but have purchased a few of their products, from hand soap to toilet bowl cleaner.

I haven’t been able to justify the cost of the new laundry detergent – until now! Go online to print your $2 off coupon. No zip code? – c’mon use 90210. I always go for a detergent that looks “green” but it can be frustrating navigating the cryptic labels. Good news! Method has been pronounced green as green can be in a review by Inhabitat – Design Will Save the World.
