eye candy: Camera Bags

June 29, 2011

We had a media tour visit us at Boulevard Magazine a few weeks ago, and the photographer had the most excellent camera bag. I don’t see the exact one here, but it has been determined that it was from Kelly Moore bags. It’s a great site, with videos of how the bags work and fantastic cross section diagrams.

Fanatical eh?

June 16, 2011

I wonder how these people are feeling about themselves after the Stanley Cup riots? What is this all about anyway? Is this hockey? Is this Vancouver? Is this what it means to be a fan?

fan:
fanatical enthusiast or supporter
fanatical:
1. Filled with excessive and single-minded zeal.
2. Obsessively concerned with something.

It’s great to enjoy a sport, but what’s up with the die-hard, nervous energy, aggression-driven passion? Where did this state of mind come from and more importantly, where is it going? The game was an excuse for bad people to behave badly. Were any spurred to action from actual disappointment at the outcome of the game or are they just crazy? If anything good could come from this, the shot of the couple smooching on the ground is unreal. All photos via nationalpost.com.

in the house: Midwest Windows

June 7, 2011

When looking at houses, one of my most frequent comments is, “where are the windows??”. This home featured on Dwell’s website does not have that problem. Relying on local materials and local craftspeople, this home takes simplicity and function to a refreshing level. I love how the slabs of limestone for the house’s front steps were rested on a layer of ice cubes, creating just enough clearance for the nylon straps to be pulled free. The slabs settled into place as the ice melted.

A Pretty. Fun. Picnic. In a Box.

Eco-friendly picnic boxes for urbanites with a hankering for a picnic. Fully compostable utensils, plates, cups and napkins.

“Sorry, wicker, it was fun while it lasted, but the new picnic belongs to post-consumer pulp. So pack up and park on. It’s time to escape the office for an afternoon, schedule that over-due date or just go have some fun.” – Boxal

happy hour: Mint Julep

May 20, 2011

The only thing edible in my garden right now is mint. And with the Kentucky Derby being a May thing, it only makes sense to add the julep to your May long weekend cocktail list.

mint julep

Ingredients

4 cups bourbon
2 bunches fresh spearmint
1 cup distilled water
1 cup granulated sugar
Powdered sugar

Directions

To prepare mint extract, remove about 40 small mint leaves. Wash and place in a small bowl. Cover with 3 ounces bourbon. Allow the leaves to soak for 15 minutes. Then gather the leaves in paper toweling. Thoroughly wring the mint over the bowl of whisky. Dip the bundle again and repeat the process several times.

To prepare simple syrup, mix 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of distilled water in a small saucepan. Heat to dissolve sugar. Stir constantly so the sugar does not burn. Set aside to cool.

To prepare mint julep mixture, pour 3 1/2 cups of bourbon into a large glass bowl or glass pitcher. Add 1 cup of the simple syrup to the bourbon.

Now begin adding the mint extract 1 tablespoon at a time to the julep mixture. Each batch of mint extract is different, so you must taste and smell after each tablespoon is added. You are looking for a soft mint aroma and taste-generally about 3 tablespoons. When you think it’s right, pour the whole mixture back into the empty liter bottle and refrigerate it for at least 24 hours to “marry” the flavors.

To serve the julep, fill each glass (preferably a silver mint julep cup) 1/2 full with shaved ice. Insert a spring of mint and then pack in more ice to about 1-inch over the top of the cup. Then, insert a straw that has been cut to 1-inch above the top of the cup so the nose is forced close to the mint when sipping the julep.

When frost forms on the cup, pour the refrigerated julep mixture over the ice and add a sprinkle of powdered sugar to the top of the ice. Serve immediately.

arsty: If Hughes only knew

May 18, 2011

via www.theglobeandmail.com

This E.J. Hughes painting originally sold for $350 in 1952. How does $1.1-million at auction for return on investment sound? This week in Vancouver, the previous record was broken for a work by the Vancouver Island painter. He died in 2007.

From The Globe and Mail:
“Coastal Boats Near Sidney, BC, signed and dated 1948, was acquired by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia directly from the artist, who was born in North Vancouver but lived for most of his life on Vancouver Island. The College held onto it for almost 60 years, along with Hughes’ 1952 work, Mouth of the Courtenay River. That painting, which the College bought for $150, sold at auction Tuesday for just under $790,000.”

artsy: Royal Coat of Arms

April 29, 2011

via www.ctv.ca

Herald Painter Robert Parsons, sketches the new Coat of Arms for Kate Middleton’s family, at the College of Arms in London, Monday April 18, 2011. Middleton used this Coat of Arms until her wedding day yesterday, when it was merged with the Prince’s Coat of Arms. Kate’s heraldic design features a tied ribbon to show she is an unmarried woman and the overall shape is an elaborate lozenge – a shield would be used for Middleton men.

I think this tradition should become the new trend. How fabulous to have your own image you can combine with your chosen one.
