Educating yourself about what’s at the far end of the spectrum and then pairing back and using aspects that resinate with you is an important part of good design.
Intrigued by a discussion on Facebook this morning that was sparked by the status report “wonders if American Apparel is really as hilarious as she thinks it is, or if she’s just getting old”, I decided to peruse the website. A new store opened in Victoria a few months ago, and I was pretty excited to check it out. I wandered the empty store and after I analyzed the aisles for a good 15 mins, I felt pressure to make a purchase.
So the web site is seemingly innocent with cotton/polyester fun and games until you come across the cutout tights and spandex thong uni-tards. Some of the gym mat photos I wouldn’t dare post here. Maybe if I rented FAME I could get away with the legwarmers and full spandex.
What I want to know is, “American Apparel, am I too old or is it hilarious”?
This I can understand:
This, not so much:

They make the comfiest, pre-broken-in t-shirts… Overpriced, of course, but nice. I won’t be hopping on the seafoam green lame legging trend, though.
Not even these? http://store.americanapparel.ca/rsac349.html?cid=905
Seriously though. American Apparel was awarded 2008 Retailer of the Year at the Michael Awards (“the Oscars of Fashion”). I read their philosophy hoping to hear “we took our love of dancing and bodywear to the next level”. Please tell me this is somewhat accurate.
we may be too old = but think back to when we were kids and rocking that horrid grunge look – I think its the same thing for these kids – Young people are a tribe all unto themselves – I think a lot of them look really cool but don’t have any interest in wearing the same thing as a 20 year old
Beth I am sooo buying you a pair of those HOT ass pants with the tribal print. I happen to own the sexy lace unitard and do that exact move when I’m wearing it.
though i jest, i did purchase a pair of gold lamé hot pants.
Hammer Pants were bad back in the day, but those tribal print pants are much worse! i honestly don’t think they really sell the Uni-tard thong (imagine the extreme wedgy it would have as you moved your arms!!) They just make that stuff so we talk about it!
Come on Beth! I can totally see you rocking the skin tight lace minidress! jk
AA owes at least some of their success to this blog, Pacing the Panic Room:

the mama wore their clothes in every shoot I think and it’s such a cool photo documentary of 40 weeks of pregnancy
Pacing the Panic room is really fascinating Sarah! Thanks for sending the link.
